Sydney Adventist Hospital

2014 Milestone Re-development

Our organisation donated $250,000 AUD to the Sydney Adventist Hospital for the re-development plan. It is a life-changing opportunity to bring a better environment and facility to patients. We are proud to have the former Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott and NSW Minister of Health and Medical Research, Jillian Skinner as our guests of honour.

About SAH

Sydney Adventist Hospital is a division of Adventist HealthCare Limited. Adventist HealthCare Limited (formerly known as ‘Sydney Adventist Hospital Limited’), is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and is a ‘Not-For-Profit’ organisation that operates a number of healthcare businesses including: Sydney Adventist Hospital, San Day Surgery Hornsby, and San Diagnostics & Pharmacy.

Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH), known as ‘the San’, is an acute-care private hospital with a capacity for over 550 licensed overnight beds. It is the largest private and the largest not-for-profit hospital in NSW.

The San is the largest single employer in the Hornsby-Kuring-gai Council area. Approximately 2,400 staff, 500 volunteers and 1,100 accredited medical practitioners care for more than 60,000 inpatients and 120,000 outpatients annually and approximately 1,800 babies are delivered each year. Emergency Care admits more than 18,000 patients each year making it NSW’s largest and busiest private Hospital Emergency Department. The San offers acute surgical, medical and obstetric care including complex cardiac and orthopaedic procedures.

SAH offers the latest in services, technology and facilities, including 23 operating theatre and endoscopy suites, 3 cardiac catheterisation laboratories, intensive care and coronary care units, a renal dialysis unit, day infusion unit, and dedicated units for adults and children’s sleep disorders. In September 2017, SAH commenced the new San Rehabilitation service, offering patients the option of having both acute surgical and rehabilitation services under the same roof. Advanced technologies implemented in recent years include Australia’s first X and X(i) robotic surgery unit (October 2017), supported by several of Australia’s leading robotic surgeons; NSW’s first MAKO orthopaedic robot introduced in late 2015 (enabling precision insertion of prosthetic implants for hip and knee replacement procedures); and the new state-of-the-art Hybrid operating theatre opened in August 2017 (enabling vascular and cardiac surgeons to do both minimally invasive and complex surgeries in the one space).

Outpatient services at the San include physiotherapy, radiology, ultrasound services for women, fertility services, pathology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, wound care clinic and an on-site family medical and dental centre. Support services available on the campus include Cardiac Rehabilitation, San Cancer Support and Jacaranda Lodge which offers low-cost accommodation for outpatients and their families.

The hospital’s humanitarian arm, Open Heart International was established in 1986. Funded through general public support, along with government aid and other philanthropic supporters, medical and nursing specialist volunteers provide urgent medical care to patients living in developing countries with little or no access to the services they need. Project visits focus on helping patients in need as well as capacity building the skills of medical and nursing professionals in the countries visited. Since inception, 189 trips have seen over 1,500 individual volunteers deployed across 16 countries, with nearly 7,000 patient lives being transformed.

On-site facilities include the San Clinic and the new San Clinic Tulloch which both provide specialist consultant rooms.

The San is a teaching hospital of The University of Sydney, and the Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School (SAHCS) opened in February 2011. It is the first fully-fledged private hospital clinical school in NSW and results from a partnership with Sydney Medical School of The University of Sydney. As an inter-professional, multidisciplinary school it offers clinical training placements for medical, physiotherapy, pharmacy, and other allied health profession students. The San College of Education is a registered training organisation which offers an extensive range of nationally recognised certificate programs to San and other employees, while Avondale College Faculty of Nursing & Health is one of Australia’s last remaining on-site nursing schools and provides comprehensive nursing education in both undergraduate and post-graduate courses.
